JEF, the Format for Janome Machines

JEF is the native format for Janome and Elna embroidery machines, aimed mainly at home and craft-level equipment. Like PES, it stores both the stitches and the thread colors, so a JEF design typically opens with its color plan already intact.

Janome hoops tend to be smaller than commercial fields, so design size matters more with JEF than with a commercial format. If you run a Janome machine, ask for JEF and mention your largest hoop, so the design is built to fit the space you actually have.

Keep the Source File, Not Just the Machine File

All of the formats above are output files, flattened stitch files ready to run. There is another file that matters just as much: the source, often a native working file like an EMB, which holds the design as editable objects rather than fixed stitches.

The source file is what makes clean edits possible later. Resizing, recoloring, or adjusting a design is far easier from the source than from a flattened DST or PES.
