On one, the lettering catches the light and the edges are crisp. On the other,
the same letters look flat and slightly furred, and the solid shape behind them
feels stiff enough to stand up on its own. Same thread, same machine, same
artwork.
The difference is stitch type. Embroidery has
essentially three of them, and almost every design you have ever seen is built
from some combination of the three. Knowing what each one is for makes it much
easier to look at a file, or a sample, and understand why it behaves the way it
does. It is also the vocabulary that lets you have a useful conversation with embroidery
digitizing services instead of guessing.
Satin: The Stitch That Catches the Light
A satin stitch runs side to side across a shape, laying long parallel threads that sit on the surface. Because each thread is unbroken across the width, light travels along it and reflects back. That is where the sheen comes from, and it is why satin is the natural choice for lettering, borders, and any narrow shape that needs a clean edge.
It also has a working window. Below about 1.5 mm the
needle has no room to throw the thread properly and the shine disappears. Above
roughly 7 or 8 mm on a garment, those long floats become a snag hazard,
catching on a fingernail, a washing machine, or a door handle. Past 10 mm most
machines will not sew a satin at all. Wide shapes get split into sections or
converted to fill instead.
Fill: Coverage That Still Has to Feel Like Fabric
Fill stitch, often called tatami, covers large areas with rows of short stitches laid in a brick-like pattern. It uses less thread than satin over the same area and, more importantly, it distributes tension so the fabric underneath is not pulled in one direction. Backgrounds, solid shapes, and anything sitting behind other elements are almost always fill.
Two settings decide how it feels. Row spacing of around
0.4 mm is a common starting point, opened up on knits and closed slightly on
loose weaves. Stitch length usually sits near 3.5 to 4 mm. Push either too far
toward density and you get the stiff plastic-feeling patch everyone recognizes;
too far the other way and the garment shows through. Digitizers also set fills
on an angle, often near 45 degrees, because rows running straight across tend
to show faint banding wherever tension varies.
Running Stitch: The One Doing Most of the Invisible Work
A running stitch is simply a line of single stitches following a path, usually two to four millimeters apart. It handles the things the other two cannot: hairlines, fine internal detail, small outlines, and the travel between elements that keeps a design from jumping all over the hoop.
It also does the job you never see. Underlay is built
from running and light zigzag stitches, laid before anything visible to anchor
the fabric and give the top layer a stable base. When a digitizer needs a
visible line with a bit more weight, they run it back and forth as a bean or
triple stitch rather than reaching for a satin that would be too wide.

Why One Shape Changes Stitch
Type as It Shrinks
The same element does not keep the same stitch type at every size. A leaf in a logo might be a fill at four inches, a satin at one and a half, and a simple running outline at half an inch, because each version has to survive the size it is stitched at.
Lettering shows this most clearly. Text is satin almost
by default, but a quarter inch of letter height is the practical floor on
smooth fabric, and below that the columns get so narrow the counters in letters
like a and e close up. This is why a digitizer sometimes asks to enlarge a
tagline rather than simply obey the artwork, and it is the point where good
embroidery digitizing services raise a question instead of stitching something
they know will fail.
What the Wrong Choice Looks Like on the Garment
Faults are usually readable if you know what to look for. A wide, glossy area that snags on a fingernail is a satin that should have been a fill. A stiff, board-like patch is a fill set too dense for the fabric. Faint stripes across a solid shape point to fill angle or tension rather than thread quality.
Others show up over time. Lettering that looked
acceptable off the machine but blurs after a few washes was usually built too
narrow or too small. Thin lines that vanish into the fabric were probably
running stitches where the design needed a bean stitch or a narrow satin to
hold their weight.
How to Use This When You Order or Review a File
You do not need to specify stitch types when you order, and it is better that you do not. What helps is giving the digitizer the information that drives those choices: the fabric, the finished size in inches, the placement, and which details in the logo have to survive. The stitch decisions follow from those.
When the sample arrives, look at it with these three in mind. Run a fingernail across the wide areas, check that letters are crisp and readable at arm's length, and flex the design to see whether it still moves with the cloth. Satin, fill, and running stitch are a small toolkit, and the craft is in choosing between them for a specific shape on a specific fabric at a specific size. Once you can see those three at work in a design, a sew-out stops being something you either like or dislike and becomes something you can actually read.
